Last week was ridiculous. I have a new part-time job (more on that later), and in addition to that, Rob and I probably put in 40 or 50 hours each getting our show together. The payoff was worth it—the shows have been great so far (you should come to one of our upcoming performances). But I'd like to take this opportunity to thank a few of the things that got me through last week:

  1. My Bicycle

A couple of years ago, Chris turned the bike my parents bought me in middle school into an awesome frankenbike. It's been a wonderful little citywide transport, and last week it saved me a lot of time by getting me places faster than public transport could.

  2. Accidentally Amazing Brownies

I started making he recipe on the back of the Nestle cocoa powder box, but I ended up with this:

    Ingredients

    • 2/3 cup white sugar
    • 1 cup light brown sugar
    • 3/4 cup butter, melted
    • 2 T water
    • 2 large eggs
    • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
    • 1-1/3 cups white whole-wheat flour
    • 3/4 cup baking cocoa
    • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 3/4 cup butterscotch chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9" x 9" pan. Combine sugar, butter, and water in a large bowl. Stir in eggs and vanilla. Dump blower, cooca, baking powder, and salt on top of liquid mixture and mix the dry ingredients while they float precariously on top of the wet. Then mix them with the wet. Stir in chips. Put in pan. Bake for approximately 25 minutes, or until your desired brownie doneness.

  3. The "Day Man" Song from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

More than anything else, this tiny video clip made me maniacally happy last week. Rob and I kept stopping practice to watch it:

Tomorrow is St. Patrick's day, the annual celebration of Irish culture and dollar store clover-leaf jewelry. This year, instead of drinking Guinness, Harp, or whiskey, consider trying a totally new drink that doesn't just celebrate Ireland, but also honors its history.

As many people know, one of the worst blights to ever hit Ireland was the potato famine of the mid-1800's. The potato was the staple of most Irish diets, and when disease decimated the crop, the nation was crippled by hunger. It's estimated that between 1846 and 1849, up to three million people died of hunger and two million people emigrated to other countries.

In honor of the poor souls who died or were uprooted in the famine, I have invented the Potato Shot. You need the following ingredients:

  • Potato vodka
  • A potato

Instructions: Carve one (for small potato) or two (for large potato) shot glasses out of the potato. Fill with potato vodka. Drink. Green dye optional.

It’s not too late to serve the ultimate football-watching fare at your Super Bowl party! Wing shots are an easy-to-prepare food and drink combination that are sure to satisfy even the hungriest and thirstiest football fans.

Ingredients:

  • 12 oz. beer
  • Hot wing

Directions:

Pour the 12 oz. of beer into a glass. Drop the hot wing in and consume the contents of the glass immediately, as you would with any “drop-in” shot drink, such as an Irish Car Bomb. Delish!

…was a little disappointing. I didn’t really like the yam part of it. Here’s the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 yams
  • (1) 16 oz. can black beans
  • 1 tsp lime juice
  • 1 avocado
  • 2 tomatoes
  • 8 oz. black olives
  • 3 tbsp cilantro
  • 1/2 hot green chili

The Yam Experience: Peel and chop the yams; heat them in water until soft. Mash with the lime juice. Drain and heat the black beans. Mix yam and black beans together.

The Southwestern: Chop the avocado, tomatoes, olives, cilantro, and green chili, and mix together. Place on top of Yam Experience.

Like I said, there was something with the Yam Experience that didn’t sit right with me. Maybe it was the fact that it was an "experience" instead of a "meal." Today, however, I mixed a half-cup of quinoa with half-a-can of black beans and put the Southwestern on top. And hoo-boy, that was some comfort food.
